October
4, we were picked up by our driver, William of WildTrek Safaris and
as we dropped down from the Kenya highlands into the Great Rift Valley
the panoramic views were spectacular. At this point the valley is
30 miles wide and it wasn’t long before we started seeing our
first few wild animals. The closer we got to Lake Nakuru the more
animals we began to see. |
|
We
stayed at the Sarova
Lion Hill Lodge. This was a perfect choice of where
to start our safari. The lodge is very beautiful, accommodating,
and well located for enjoying the park.

The
birdlife on the shores of Lake Nakuru is amazing. Hundreds of thousands,
if not millions, of flamingos and pelicans ring the lake shore along
with smaller dotted groups of marabou stork and other birds. |
|
Lake
Nakuru is by far the smallest of the parks that we visited, only about
65 square miles but it makes up for its small size with beautiful
vistas and plenty of easy-to-see wildlife. The varied areas of forests,
open land, marshes, and lakes make stunning backdrops for wildlife
photography. |
The
millions of flamingos, pelicans, and other birds are what the park
has long been famous for but in recent years this has become a rhinoceros
sanctuary. This was the only place we saw colobus monkeys plus we
also saw a few eland, giraffe, hyena, jackal, leopard, lions, secretary
birds, warthog, and lots of baboon, black faced vervet monkeys, cape
buffalo, Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala,
marabou stork, waterbuck, and zebra. This must be very much like what
the Garden of Eden must have been like. |

While
at Baboon Cliffs we came upon a bus load of schoolkids on an outting to
the park. We really enjoyed interacting with them and they seem like really
great kids! As I promised here are the photos we took of you ... send
me an email to let me know that you've seen them. Thanks.
