WOW!
If you haven't traveled in East Africa go now ... before it's
too late. We brought our camping gear with us and traveled on
our own. We traveled from November 20 1987 through January 2,
1988. Even without a guide we would see thousands of animals each
day. And we saw all of the 'Big 5' including five leopard!
The Parks
They are all worth seeing and each one is quite different from
the others.
Masai
Mara
A MUST! One of my three favorites parks. Lots of animals of all
kinds and easy to see. We stayed several days at Keekorok Lodge
- It was great. We also camped several days just out side of Keekorok
Lodge - Just a place to throw a tent. No extras.
Nakuru
A MUST! One of my three favorites parks. Millions of flamingos
and pelicans plus several large animals.
We camped in the park at Nyani Campground for several days - Beautiful
- Just a place to throw a tent. No extras.
Amboseli
A MUST! One of my three favorites parks. Lots of animals of all
kinds and easy to see.
We stayed several days at Ol Tukai Lodge - Very basic but we were
comfortable
We camped several days a few miles west of Amboseli Serena Lodge
- Just a place to throw a tent. No extras. But, with Mt. Kilimanjaro
as a back drop it was beautiful.
Tsavo
A very big park! The animals were much more difficult to find
and see.
We camped several days - My least favorite park and my least favorite
camping area. - But, it's still worth seeing.
Lake
Bogoria
Lots of flamingos and geysers
Beautiful basic campsites at Fig Tree Camp - Just a place to throw
a tent. No extras.
Nairobi
National Park
If this was the only park you saw you would think it was wonderful
... and it is! However, since it located only a few miles out
of Nairobi it shows the biggest effects of humans. - It's worth
seeing.
Aberdare
A comfortable way to see animals
We stayed one night at Treetops Lodge and one other night at the
Outspand - Very nice and very expensive.
The
cities and towns
For the most part I found the cities and towns of Kenya rather
uninteresting.
Lolgorien
Very small and undeveloped – Go on market day … Sorry I can’t
remember what day is market day.
Lamu
If you can work it into your itinerary you’ll be glad you did.
The best way to get to Lamu is by flying out of Nairobi or Mombassa.
Great food. Yumbe House -- Clean and moderately priced
Nairobi
Like most counties around the world the big cities attract the
riffraff. However, there are a few good thing to see and do around
Nairobi. But mostly after traveling 28 hours to get there it’s
a good place to rest up before hitting the road. Hotel Boulevard
-- Nice and moderately priced – close to the Museum
Carnivore Restaurant -- Go there it’s fun
Nairobi Museum -- Worth seeing
Nairobi National Park -- Worth seeing
Shompoli Hills
Very small and undeveloped
Mombassa
There really wasn’t much here that held our interest.
Kisii
A good place to do a little shopping.
