Rincon de Guayabitos (about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta)
After landing at the Puerto Vallarta airport and picking up our rental car we immediately drove about an hour north of town to Rincon de Guayabitos. This is a great town that’s just the right size. Big enough to have a variety of hotels and restaurants but yet small enough to have a laid back comfortable feel. Situated on a nice bay it was the perfect place to start our trip.

Chacala is located a few miles north of Guayabitos and has one of the nicest beaches we saw on the whole trip.

Melaque/Barra De Navidad (3 ½ hours south of Puerto Vallarta)
Melaque and Barra De Navidad is located a boring 3 ½ hours of hard steady driving south of Puerto Vallarta. Located on a huge curved bay you can walk from town to town via the beach. Melaque is the old “working town” and Barra De Navidad is more the “tourist town.” We chose to stay in Melaque and drive to Barra De Navidad for meals. The wave action doesn’t allow for relaxed swimming and really isn’t good for surfing either but it is a very beautiful setting.

Mismaloya/Boca de Tomatlan (a few miles south of Puerto Vallarta)
On our way north back to Puerto Vallarta we stopped in Boca de Tomatlan for a snorkel trip out to Los Arcos near Mismaloya. “Boca” is a beautiful little bay and Boca Divers proved to be a great choice. Carla and Stephen of Boca Divers were great. They offer the right mixture of laid-back attitude but yet with a goal of working to please. I recommend them as a good choice for diving or snorkeling.

  Puerto Vallarta
It had been about 30 years since I was last in Puerto Vallarta. Wow, it has changed a lot and grown a great deal but yet it still has a warm comfortable feel. Yep, it’s a tourist town but it’s a nice tourist town. I’m glad we chose to stay in the old part of town rather than at one of the resort hotels on the north or south beaches. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Gaviotas.
